DEFEAT POVERTY

Updated: Feb 18, 2022

It’s the first of 17 global sustainable development goals to save the human species and ecosystems. That is why it is important to reduce differences and poverty in the world. You have an appointment with your future, find out how you can contribute.

One in five people live like this …

Could you live on 1.08 euros a day? It would be just over 32 euros a month. Impossible? In developing countries, especially in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, this is the figure that one in five people live with.

ONU data estimates that 836 million people in the world are in conditions of extreme poverty. There are 14 times the inhabitants of Italy: this maybe helps you understand the proportions of the problem.

Very often it is thought that malnutrition, poverty and low levels of education are now distant phenomena in Western countries. In reality, according to the Poverty Report of the Commission on Human Development of the US Bishops' Conference, one in six minors live in conditions of extreme economic hardship in the United States.

A problem closer than you think

In Italy, the latest ISTAT statistics revealed that more than 5.6 million people live in conditions of absolute poverty. Considering the age group from 18 to 34, this is the life of 1.13 million young people. And there are also thousands of girls, boys and teenagers who can have a full meal only thanks to school canteens and aid from humanitarian associations.

To be included in the category of absolute poverty, an individual must not be able to get what is necessary for his survival, including food, goods and services (medicines, school books, bus tickets).
