PEACE, JUSTICE AND SOLID INSTITUTIONS

Peace, justice and strong institutions. Goal 16 of the ONU 2030 Agenda aims to promote peaceful and more inclusive societies for sustainable development, offer access to justice and create efficient, responsible and inclusive bodies at all levels. These are high principles, very difficult to embed in concrete actions. We usually think that this objective has little to do with our country, if not for historical issues such as the fight against the mafia or the overcrowding of prisons. Instead, it is essential to take into consideration all the issues present in its targets: human rights, tolerance, justice, harmony, equity, social inclusion, the need for greater governance capacity in contrasting universal forms of violence, hate and discrimination.

PROGRESSION TO DATE

The pandemic has had a positive effect on this Goal. In particular, positive effects are observed on the relative crime dimension: during the lockdown there was a sharp decline in homicides and predatory crime, which reach their historical lows, decreasing respectively by 10.4% and 37.8% in a only year. To report, in contrast, the increase in scams and computer fraud, which in the last year worsened by 14.4%. There is also a significant improvement in the indicator on the overcrowding of prisons, which in 2020 reaches the best value in the historical series, equal to 105.5%, thus approaching the target threshold of 100% thanks to the measures implemented to limit the contagion of the virus within the prisons. Finally, it should be noted that trust in institutions reaches its maximum value, again in 2020.
