A high level of education is the fundamental basis for improving the quality of life and spreading more sustainable development for the global community. Over the past decade, notable results have been achieved in educating women and girls from the poorest countries. More generally, the global literacy rate has grown in these territories, bringing enrollment in primary schools to 91%, although 57 million children are still excluded. Despite the progress made, the gender and geographical disparities between countries in the north and south of the world are still large: more than half of children not enrolled in school live in sub-Saharan Africa, while 103 million young people worldwide they do not possess basic reading and writing skills; of these, over 60% are women.
The fourth goal in Italy
The quality of Italian education is lower than the European average. A still high number of adolescents (between 15% and 25%) does not reach the minimum threshold of the skills considered indispensable for orientation in studies and work. Gender disparity persists in science subjects: less than a third of girls choose to study subjects such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics at university. However, funds for Global Citizenship Education projects were allocated throughout 2016 and 2017 by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
We are aware that to get a decent education it would not be enough to attend school, students must immediately live in a safe and rewarding learning area and be guided by a trained educator
